Holiday Prep!!!

December is fast approaching and for 'Nesta' that means Holiday goodies in the shop AND, of course, baby time!!! Since the baby will decide on her own when she wants to enter the world I can only try and be really planned for everything else...

I've been working hard getting all of my Holiday items ready and listed in the shop... Here are a few goodies:

the Holiday Hemp Accent Pillow Collection

These pillows are hand stamped with antique text printing blocks using water based inks onto a 50% hemp/50% cotton fabric. This soft, medium weight hemp blend fabric has the look of linen and is a sustainable fiber that is eco-friendly.

... And I'm really happy with the way my new kitchen towels have turned out! Perfect for gift giving and priced reasonably enough to keep a set for yourself :)

These towels are hand stamped with antique printing blocks using water based inks. The towels are prewashed 100% cotton, have a hook for hanging and are completely machine washable.

Planning Ahead...

This year I am determined to plan ahead for Christmas and the New Year... Due to the fact that little 'Nesta' could arrive really close to Christmas OR New Years I want to have everything ready to go in the shop. I 'normally' don't have any elves helping me around the Holidays but I may have to enlist some this year!

So, as part of my 'plan ahead' goal I introduce the 2010 Urban Scenes Calendar. Doesn't 2010 have such a nice ring to it?

A shop update and a weekend away...

I'm packing my bags and getting ready to head out of town for a long weekend in Northern California (my old stomping grounds). My husband and I have a cousin's wedding to attend (and help photograph) and a Giants Baseball Game to relax at on Sunday. The 30 degree drop in temperature is going to be a much needed relief!

I wanted to leave you with some new listings in my shop that I am very excited about... It was a goal of mine a year and a half ago to be able to create something like this and I'm very proud of the work I've put into getting to my goal:

One sewing class, two textile printing classes, and lots and lots of frustrating mistakes later I can now proudly offer Hand Stamped Fabric. I'm quite the perfectionist so getting to the point to be able to offer something for sale is HUGE for me! I hope you enjoy :)

A baby's room on a budget... Display Ideas

I ran across this photo the other day and thought something like this would look perfect over the baby's changing table:

Instead of cute little bathing suits I thought that making some fabric drawstring linen bags that read 'laundry', 'diapers', and 'towels' would be more functional. I'm really low on storage places so making this display into a hidden storage piece would work great!

Now that I have the idea down I decided to browse Etsy for some hooks (or something like the above)... I was so delighted to find such a wide variety of listings!

A baby's room on a budget... THE CRIB, yo!

As 'Sweet Child of Mine' just begins to play on the radio I decided that maybe I should share with you some progress on the baby's room!!!

I've gotten rid of lots of clutter and set up 2 pretty crucial pieces of furniture:

Here's a very plain lamp shade I picked
up at Ikea. I plan on embellishing it to add
the finishing touches to the room.

I can't help but daydream about what to put up on the walls... I really don't like putting my own artwork up simply because I will stare and critique it constantly... Plus, I enjoy supporting fellow artist and crafters. Over the years I've acquired a few pieces of work that I am in the process of frame matching to display in our little girl's room:

Loveland Boutique Grand Opening!

Just wanted to give you a heads that up if you're in the Phoenix/Mesa/Tempe area check out this adorable new boutique 'Loveland'. Their official Grand Opening is this Saturday 7pm-10pm. Details on their website here: www.Lovelandkids.com.

I happened to swing by yesterday to organize dropping off some Nesta goods and it is looking fabulous! Jinia and Althea, the owners, are super awesome and the boutique is attached to a coffee shop (you can't beat that). Lots of handmade goods and super duper kid friendly!!!

So hopefully I will see you there Saturday!!! Oh, and the shopping center has plenty of great restaurants so why not make a night of it? Dinner and Shopping :) (that's my plan)

A baby's room on a budget...

As many of you know my husband and I will be having our very fist little one in December... and we just found out it's a girl!!! Now that the gender is straightened out (hopefully) it's time to start turning one of our bedrooms (which serves as my fabric/craft overflow storage room - guestroom) into our little one's living quarters.

This is going to be a chore considering we have very little storage in our home AND we are working on a very low budget. We also need a place for occasional visitors to sleep. So... I'd thought I'd share with you the progress we make and maybe pass on to you some money saving tips and bargains (I know we all could use them these days).

I also thought I'd share with you some 'before' photos... I notice that 'designers' tend to only blog about how perfect their house is/looks... and we all know that they MUST have a room (or space) somewhere that looks like this:

Back from the City...

I'm just getting settled back into home after a nice long vacation to New York City with the ladies of my family (sister, cousin, aunt, mother, and grandma).

It was so neat to be with the generations of ladies in the family... and to know I was carrying around the very next generation in my belly.

She had fun in New York too :)... (Oh yeah, found out we're having a girl today!)

Getting out of the house and getting some traveling in was just what I needed... After months of morning sickness I am finally feeling more like myself.

And on that note I wanted to share some new pieces of artwork I listed in my shop...

As I get prepare to head out to San Diego to party with one of my dearest friends for her bachelorette festivities, I start to get a little nostalgic...

Ever since I started playing volleyball in the 6th grade my dearest friends have always been my teammates... When I left for college my teammates were my family, my sisters, my friends, my partymates, my wing-women, my classmates, you name it.

As time pushes me farther and farther away from those amazing years I grow to appreciate my experiences of being part of a 'team' more and more. There was something really precious and amazing that we got to experience.

The ups and downs of being student athletes, double days, injuries, trying to study when you live in 'Newport Beach', the parties, the dancing, the cat fights, the list is endless.

All of those experiences I have come to miss dearly as we all get older and settle into our adult lives... So this weekend is extra special to all of us.

Cheers Doris!!! I Look forward to partying like its 1996?!

A way to use your scraps!

As many of you know I've been experimenting with block and screen printing over the past month... Well, that also means a month worth of fabric with misprints. I hate creating waste and until I figured out how to put the scraps back into use I didn't want continue to buy fabric...

So, I came up with these simple decorations that I am going to use as customer 'thank you' gifts.

Scraps of fabric stuffed with a little fiberfill and ready to hang on a door knob or anywhere around the house :) They are light so they make great additions to my outgoing packages...

Hand Stamped Throw Pillows - Listing Today!!!

I am starting to list my new collection of Hand Stamped Throw Pillows! So excited :)

Lovely Blooms

The 12" x 14" pillow was created using individually carved ink blocks and stamped in a collage fashion with fabric ink. Each pillow in this collection is One of a Kind textile artwork and block design, carving, stamping, and sewing are all done by me.

Learning Something New Part Two

Today we learned how to screen print using a simple design cut out of a sheet of plastic... I started with my logo :)

... and then moved on to some abstract shapes. I really wanted to test out printing on different materials (i.e. corduroy, denim, basic cotton) as well as different fabric colors and patterns.

Next week we'll be drawing onto our screens to create more intricate designs and I promise to take a photo with me in it!!!

Learning Something New...

At the beginning of the month I started my short silk screening class at the local community college... I knew it was something that I always wanted to learn but never would've guessed what a natural evolution working with this medium was.

So far the first two weeks of class has involved learning to block print. Put simply, carving your designs onto linoleum and then using them as stamps. I've used this process in the past but never knew the proper techniques.

I've always found dealing with negative space somewhat difficult and the inconsistent print patterns terrifying... But the result is so satisfying!

I decided to try out my blocks on a simple birthday card for my mother... Here's a peak!

I have two more weeks of class and those weeks involve silk screening... So stay tuned :)

Interview Time!

I just finished filling out an interview for a blog called 'the downtown boutique' and was thinking 'Maybe I should share the answers with my blog readers'. There's some interesting stuff you might now know about me :)

1. Where did you get your start in "crafting"?
I've always been involved in designing and making things... When I discovered Etsy I nurtured those ideas and brought more of them to life.

2. What is your favorite medium to use in your crafting?
I love the camera. In college I wanted to go into film. It took my love of photography to a whole new level. The choreography of images, sound, and motion allowed for so many possibilities to tell a story.

3. What is your best-selling item?
My Alone in the City Series Prints. They are inspired by the time in my life I lived in London. The experiences I had while living and working there make up a huge part of who I am. I think these pieces really connect to that.

4. What do you do aside from selling on Etsy?
I don't do much outside of Etsy at the moment. I pick up a few side projects here and there but I’ve been lucky to of had some great opportunities selling on and off of Etsy.

5. If you suddenly came into a million tax-free dollars, what would you do with it?
I know I should say 'Give it to charity' but... I'd love a house on the beach?! Who doesn't right?

6. What's the inspiration behind your work?
A lot of my inspiration comes from my travels and from my studies. I studied Sociology, Art and Film Studies in college (I couldn't’t make up my mind) and always was interested in different cultures.

7. Please share three random facts about yourself.
Here we go:
1) I spent almost 15 years of my life playing Volleyball. I actually know Misty May really well and competed against her a lot growing up. Our high schools competed against each other in the California State Volleyball Championships. (she won of course).
2) My college mascot was an Anteater. Zot Zot Zot! (that’s the sound and Anteater makes apparently)
3) My business name comes from Bob Marley’s middle name. Only close friends and family know this… Shhhhhh!

Every once in awhile I get to chat with fellow etsy sellers and get to know a little about them... It's really such a friendly community and getting to know people sometimes helps you get through your day.

I got to talking to Fallon one day who owns the Etsy shop Olive. We instantly bonded over the often unbearable summers we both have living in the desert. Not too many people know what it feels like to live 3 months in over 100 degree temperatures. It's not for everyone :)

Familiar Places...

I recently returned from a trip to the Bay Area and Napa for a dear friend's wedding and wanted to share some photos with you all...

Growing up in Northern California I have seen many of the famous sights hundreds of times. I've tried to not roll down the steep hills of San Fran while at a stop sign in my stick shift Volkswagen bug, I've ridden over and over the roller coaster at the Boardwalk in Santa Cruz, I've had fresh Clam Chowder in a bread bowl, I've been to Alcatraz, Giants and 49er games, all the things you do when you live near such a glorious area of the world.

I love going back to these familiar places where, when you arrive, you suddenly recognize the smells, colors, breezes, and any other characteristics that have stuck with you over time.

I wanted to capture these characteristics I remembered so well with a camera. You know, the images that are already ingrained in your brain just not on film.

I love looking at something and thinking 'Hey, I remember you!'

and I had to journey to my favorite restaurant of course:

They serve the best German Food and Boots of Beer!!! Yummy :)

My first tote!

As some of you may know I am taking a sewing class at the local City College... I've been wanting to learn for ages and I finally have the time to take a proper class.

This was/is my first project. A Tote Bag. It's far from perfect but I'm happy with the way it turned out (considering I couldn't even turn on my machine two weeks ago).

I only went through two broken needles to make it!!! :) Poor machine!

3-day Weekend Woohoo!

Sometimes working from home means you are always working... Your weekdays and weekends seem to become the same thing. Although I would have it no other way I am noticing that I do have to declare (and stick with) my 'working hours' and my 'non-working hours'.

I found the best way to do that is to leave the house! This weekend my husband and I will be heading up to Mount Lemmon near Tuscon, Arizona to relax at a friends cabin for a few days...

I'm excited to have no computer, no cell phone reception, and no crafts lying around that could be finished!!! All I will have is my camera(s) and a load of magazines and crossword puzzles.

I hope you all have a relaxing three day weekend!

Things have been pretty busy in the shop... I had my best month ever in July!!! Woohoo! I've also gotten some great opportunities that I will share with you when the time is right...

I just finished this piece: 'Memories of an Island'.

This is a print of a digital college made from photos taken of French Polynesian dancers (in Bora, Bora).

The original images used in this collage were shot at night with a long exposure, giving the sense of motion and then combined to show the activities of the entire dance.

Bringing Paradise Home - a design series...

Less than a year ago my husband and I honeymooned in the beautiful French Polynesia...

It was a dream come true to say the least... Instead of having an over-the-top wedding we decided to have an over-the-top honeymoon.

While we were there I promised myself that when I got back I would start painting more, take more photos, and surround myself with motivation... For me that meant bringing the Polynesia style into my home as a constant reminder of beauty and inspiration.

So - in the next few weeks I will be taking a look at Polynesian design and easy ways to bring that natural beauty into your home.

It's been a rough Spring to say the least... I HATE stressing about money, work, bills, etc. And that all seems to come to a head around Tax Time.

But, I have this REALLY strong suspicion that something great is around the corner. You ever feel that way? They say that 'Hope' and 'Fear' are our two biggest motivators... And lately Hope has been my motivator.

I took this photo the other day while in the backyard:

It reminds me that Summer is around the corner. BBQ's, swimming in the Pool, hanging out with friends, warm nights, margaritas, vacations, travel, etc... You get the idea.

It's going to be a fabulous summer!!! I know it! Summer has never disappointed me in the past!

Also, on another note, everything you see in my shops (aside from Photography) is made from recycled objects from my studio... Since loosing my job a few months ago I have had to deal with what I have... No new supplies for awhile! Argh!!! (and I love buying supplies!). Although this SUCKS it has forced me to be more creative and dig deeper into creating things with ever more thought and creativeness.

For instance, my felt flowers... I have an abnormally huge supply of felt, wire, and glue... Hence the flowers:

In looking at the positives, I feel like I have learned quite a few life lessons... Like dealing with what you have - because you most likely have ENOUGH!
